About Ueno-Toshogu(shrine)

Ueno Toshogu Shrine was built in the year 1651 (Keio 4). In spring and winter, a festival is held in a peony garden, and many people enjoy looking at beautiful peonies.

Karamon: large gate with a karahafu (karaha style) gable

There is a legend that the dragon engraved by Hidarijingoro drinks water from the Shinobazu pond.

In addition, a Japanese saying notes great people hang their heads down, so the dragon whose head is facing down is called a "Noboriryu"(Rising Dragon).

Shaden: main building of a Shinto shrine

Shaden(Shrine building), is also called the Golden Hall, consisting of three rooms: Haiden, Heiden and Honden.

In order to protect cultural properties, the interior is closed.

Sukibei: see-through fence

The fence surrounding the shrine building is called "Sukibei" (permeable fence) because the other side can be seen through the lozenge-shaped lattice. The sculptures of various animals and plants are colored with paints, after covering with a gold leaf.
